• Submit weekly report by Saturday 12 noon - this is the way how I know what you do and how you do, and this is the way how you push yourself and know yourself doing.
• Attend weekly seminar - this is when you meet your advisor and your group members, and this is when you learn something new and think some idea.
• Present articles in seminars regularly - when you are on the platform, you are the expert. Be well-prepared! Know what you are presenting and ready for answer any questions.
• Submit and be-accepted at least ONE article to journals or conferences before you ready to defense your thesis - this a common requirement from most of the teachers in our department and I am going to enforce it.

• 念研究所的動機要明確
  • You need to know why you are here, what you are doing and where you are going to.

• 格局決定結局，態度決定高度
  • 你如何規劃格局你的研究所生活，就將決定了你兩年後的結局。你面對問題和挑戰的態度，也將決定了你人生的高度。

• 研究可以偷跑，學習沒有假期
  • 作研究沒有所謂的起跑點，任何時刻都是好的開始。如果你能提早起跑而且朝正確的目標前進，你自然會比別人早到達目標。而學習是終生的也是沒有假期的，任何時間、任何地點、任何方式都可以學習獲取新知。

• 先做該做的事，再做想做的事
  • 任何人任何時刻都有其想做、想達成的事，但人生總有些該做的事、該盡的義務。要規劃好你的priority。

• 做對的事，而不只是把事做對 (Do right things; not only do things right)
  • 更進一步的，把對的事做對 (Moreover, do right things right)

• Are you ready?
• First of all, congratulations and welcome to join CSIM at the Providence University.
• The first question that you need to ask yourself before you come to talk to me or other teachers is "Are you ready?" Are you ready for the master program? Do you know what it will be? If you think that it is just like the undergraduate life, please think it again!

• How do you know me?
• You may not take any courses from me before. However, you can visit my website, talk to my advisees or my students. You will know more about me.

• Are you interested in my current research topics?
• Currently, I am mostly working on data mining, cryptography, XML, and database systems. If you are also interested in these topics, it will be a plus. However, my research interests are not limited to these. If you have any research idea that I can also assist you, you are welcome to take to me.

• Can we work together?
• It is very important to work together with your advisor. You need to be your advisor's style and your advisor needs to be your style. Am I your style? You have to answer it. Are you my style? If you follow our house rules and work hard, mostly, you will be.

• Can you program?
• Most of my and my students' research involves programming, simulations and experiments. C, C++, C# and Java are commonly used. If you are not confident on programming, please start practicing it right the way.

• How is your English?
• Even through you do not need to write your master thesis in English, you have to read, study , and present lots of English journal articles. You are never too late to improve your English skill!
