世界語言類型與分析
Languages of the World: Typology & Analysis

This course is a general survey of languages of the world, their speakers, and their properties. The class will examine what kinds of different languages there are, what kind of people speak those languages, how languages differ from one another, what kinds of properties all or most languages have, and how languages are classified in terms of their structural properties.

There are three main goals of this course:

  • Introduce students to the diversity of the world’s languages and their speakers.

  • Familiarize students with the enterprise of linguistic typology ‒ the science of classifying languages according to their structural properties.

  • Bolster students’ analytical skills, especially through applying familiar concepts to unfamiliar data.
