英語語言學概論
Introduction to English Linguistics
     

This course is an introduction linguistics designed to prepare students for further study in the science of language and related fields. The first half of the course presents an overview of the origins of the scientific study of language, and an introduction to phonetics and phonology, and an a preliminary survey of syntax, semantics and pragmatics. The second half of the course is a more in-depth look at the topics discussed in the first semester.

There are three main goals of this course:

  • Introduce students to the contemporary study of language.

  • Familiarize students with major topics in linguistics, especially those that are relevant to the study of English.

  • Bolster students’ analytical skills, especially through applying familiar concepts to unfamiliar data.
