The Heart Sutra exists in two versions. The version presented here is the short one. It begins with Avalokitesvara practicing on the Perfection of Wisdom and realizing that everything is empty. This sutra can be considered the essence of all the other Prajnaparamita sutras. In the short version, Avalokitesvara is answering to Shariputra. Shariputra’s question can’t be found in this version. To know what question he is asking, one has to refer to the longer version: (cf. Jan Nattier: “That gentleman or lady who wishes to carry out a practice in the profound Perfection of Wisdom--how should he study?”).
